![]() I have a friend who got all into the Black Gates and did like the sound I know that they probably do deliver a bit for the money – – but nothing close to what they cost. It's those very expensive foil capacitors made out of various types of plastic and high-tech dielectrics and maybe some silver and other nice materials. There are a few other capacitors that have specific uses and very rare cinema equipment that get a little bit expensive as well – – but I know what you were talking about. That even covers the rarest of the Western Electric paper oil capacitors in perfect operating condition that are on top of the sound, also collectible. I can't think of any that would be worth paying more than a a few hundred/each (max!)) for (at this time). I hate to say that – – because I do also sell very expensive capacitors, just nothing close to that. To that end, I think $1000/ea for any capacitor is too much. Alligator clips will be your best friend and best teacher. Will they sound good? Some will, and some won't - depends on type and brand as per previous discussions, I guess.Īny rate, crossover circuitry is absolutely nothing special.do go there, and don't stay in the dark.get involved in your design (use a simple 1st order or 2nd order circuit and play from there), and do some experimenting. You guys might want to check those rejected caps that way - results likely won't be what you expect. How all this might apply to a LV audio signal (10 - 30 volts ish AC) is very much in the air, but to some extent is observable on a Freqency-Impedance sweep test. Most types of "Leaky" caps subjected to HV 200~600V DC (aka 0 hz) will slowly reform, but some only to a point. Keep in mind, ESR is a test made in the non-audio domain (usually 100khz where the mosquitos listen?), and "leakage" is a test for HV DC applications, not LowVolt AC like music. ![]() The special KS version of the Jensen A15PM woofer, was 16ohm (reads around 11ish DCR as I recall) But everything was wired up a little bit differently back then. The other hi-fi era WE systems – – like the 753 came in a variety of impedances. Last time I chatted with Joe, he had an interesting working theory, or perhaps just an observation that WECO had a nice ecosystem going with the lovely 171C OPT (arguably the best sounding, and most flexible in the world, really) - and it has a nice 4 ohm tap perfect for the full range speakers.īy the time everything was plumbed into the crossover of the WE757 system – – I think the system was strapped for to present a 16 ohm load – – but will have to go back and look at that. But when you go shopping for some of the fancy "Fru-Fru" audiophile caps - strange values I've noticed are scarce or really expensive. In reality anything approximately close usually works pretty well. For the bigger or lower uF figures, you can certainly find these values surplus online pretty quickly. just run the calculator and you can see the values of the chokes and capacitors simply change for the low impedance coils. Other than WE and a few RCA other odds & ends, we didn't see low impedance in HiFi until the later Solid State, "wattage wars" era.īut it's no big deal. ie the WE755,WE728, the 713 drivers (most of them) etc were all very low nominal impedance for the era - back then the norm of course was 16ohm for most all drivers, then 8ohm by the early/mid 60s. Yeah, the "Feeling of Prescence" era Western Electric components. ![]() I was just discussing this with a customer setting up a 713B/728 combo. I might inquire about the silver foil versions.Ĭlick to expand. That makes sense. The dealer said that the caps were quite good for "cheap" caps (only about $1,000 each). The speaker sounds "drier" and cleaner than with the vintage paper in oils, but, I sort of like the sound. I recently heard a speaker being built in this store where some vintage paper in oil caps were originally used for the build but they have been replaced with new Audio Note copper foil caps. The other problem is that even if the caps are within specification for capacitance and leakage, it is hard to find ones with low ESR and a number of caps have been acquired and rejected for this project. I don't know about crossover design so I am leaving this up to him, but, the caps he wants are quite expensive. The midrange driver in my system- Western Electric 713b-presents a bit of a problem because of its low impedance compared to the rest of the system such that high value or parallel caps will be needed. It is taking a fairly long time finding the paper in oil Western Electric caps he wants to use for the crossover. I have a local dealer who is trying to assemble the parts for a crossover for my speakers.

Today nearly every manufacturer offers at least one continuously variable transmission for their cars. And they kept up with the changes to these units as they became more common… and more diverse. They began to learn about CVTs the moment the first ones rolled off the assembly lines, back in the late ’80s. And no one has more experience with CVTs than your local Cottman center technicians. While the design may be simpler, CVTs bring an entirely new set of requirements to the transmission technician. So cars with CVTs can always adjust their ratio to match road conditions and engine RPM precisely. But their biggest advantage is to provide a continuous variety of ratios. The belt moves in or out along the pulleys, altering the transmission’s effective ratio.ĬVTs have fewer moving parts, creating a “simpler” design. The pulleys open and close, adjusting their effective circumferences. The CVT operates with two variable pulleys and a special belt running between them. It’s a strange feeling that takes a little getting used to. Then, as you continue to accelerate, engine RPM stops increasing while the car keeps moving faster. When you take off from a stop, the car begins to accelerate normally, with engine and vehicle speed increasing as you apply the gas. And the first time you drive one, it’s downright weird! The advanced nature of the headset will likely make it expensive, with rumors suggesting a price somewhere around $3,000. Several advanced technologies are rumored to be included in the headset, including over a dozen cameras to capture and translate real-world movements to virtual movements, two 4K micro-LED displays, iris scanning, facial expression tracking, powerful Apple silicon chips, and more. It is widely expected that Apple's first AR/VR product will be a high-end niche product aimed at developers and professionals. At WWDC, Apple will detail its new xrOS operating system and introduce developers to its new capabilities before shipping the headset in the fall. A timeline set forth by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman suggests that Apple will reveal the headset prior to WWDC, which takes place in June. Genius Electronic Optical (GSEO) will supply lens modules for VR head-mounted devices, to be launched by Apple in 2023, with shipments to begin in February-March 2023, according to GSEO's supply chain makers.Īpple has been working on its AR/VR headset for several years, with a launch expected to take place this year. Is it a developer who wants to invest time in getting ready for the eventual launch of a cheaper model? Is it someone with a specific commercial need for the expensive gear? Or is it just a rich tech fan with money to burn on a cool new toy?ĭon’t expect Apple to say that last one out loud, but without clear evidence to the contrary, it should probably be taken as the default answer.Concept render based on purported leaked information by Ian Zelbo The report states that Genius Electronic Optical (GSEO) will supply lens modules for Apple's upcoming headset, rumored to be called "Reality Pro," with shipments starting as soon as next month. Who the imagined purchaser of a $3,000 Apple VR headset is will be one of the most interesting parts of the launch event. Since then, the company has never openly courted “early adopters”, instead claiming (despite occasional evidence to the contrary) that its products are ready for the mass market from day one. If true, a $3,000 launch would suggest a radically different approach to the strategy that Apple has followed since its reinvention as a consumer electronics company in 2001. Exactly this sort of mistake was made in the run-up to the iPad’s launch a decade ago, when common consensus settled on $999 as the entry price for a machine that launched at half that. ![]() Unlike hardware details, which can leak from the physical requirement of a massive international supply chain, a price can be changed up until the last minute, and needn’t be communicated outside Apple until devices are nearly ready for launch. That last point needs to come with a massive grain of salt, of course. Key points include:Ī tethered battery pack, designed to sit in the user’s back pocket, to ease the tradeoff between power and performance on the one hand and weight and comfort on the other.Ī screen on the front of the headset, designed solely to show the user’s expressions to the outside world, with the goal of making it more comfortable to interact with people wearing the device.Ī focus on “passthrough” use, where a camera on the front of the screen shows the outside world to the wearer, with apps and features superimposed on top.Īnd, most importantly of all, a price tag of about $3,000. If even half of the detail we’ve heard about the forthcoming headset is true, it’s going to be a rare example of Apple releasing something that feels genuinely surprising, rather than a refined version of a product that is already on the market. The chicken-and-egg problem of new software platforms always throws a spanner in the works for companies like Apple: do you sell a product with no apps, or do you give third-party developers the lead time to offer something on release day, and lose the element of surprise? In this case, Apple’s likely to pick the latter option, in part because the element of surprise is mostly lost already. ![]() Unless something changes at the last minute – which, given the WWDC keynotes have been prerecorded annually since 2020, is as I type this, unlikely – we will finally see Apple’s long-planned VR/AR/XR headset for the very first time. ![]() Landmark Tire & Auto Service Inc Auto Repair & Service Tire Dealers Automotive Tune Up Service (1) (501) 888-3033 15321 Arch St Little Rock, AR 72206 CLOSED NOW 06/2011I used this repair shop to replace the radiator in my durango when it burst. ![]() Maybe the 12.4 plays a little differently, with the increased deflection you guys are talking about, but I'm not about to drop 4-5 bills to find out lol. Overall the revo is an interesting product and I might try another some day if they make one that, imo, spins the ball a little more naturally. I'm glad I tried it, but much more glad to be back to a maple shaft. I found that I could hit more fully and could count on the extreme spin to throw the object ball into the pocket. The only advantage I found was with extreme cut shots. The way it plays is very hard to get used to, at least for me. REVO CARBON COMPOSITE PLAYING SHAFTS (11.8, 12.4 & 12.9) Shaft Model Min. Very easy to unintentionally throw the object ball. I tried and gave up on the Z shaft several years ago just because of how sensitive it is to off-center hits. The revo reminds me a lot of the predator z shaft in terms of how much spin it generates on the cueball. Sold it and got back to 3142 and my game is back to normal. Shots that I make consistently with ease with a 3142 or regular maple shaft just weren't going in with the revo. Couldn't get used to it and had zero confidence with it.
